Free printable communication boards

While Kalam runs on a screen, we always keep these communication boards on paper. A printed board is a simple form of low-tech AAC, and it never runs out of battery. We wanted to share them, as they can be useful for people living with ALS, MND, or anyone who has lost the ability to speak.

How to use it

  • The person indicates a row number. You then read the letters across that row, one by one, until they signal the one they mean. Letter by letter, they spell.
  • A blink, a look up, a nod. Any signal that works for you.
  • Print at 100% (do not “fit to page”) on A4 or Letter, landscape.
  • Expert move: print it double-sided with one side flipped 180°, so both the person and the caregiver facing them see the letters upright.
  • Slide it into a plastic sleeve or laminate it for durability.
  • On the number board, repeat the number and unit back to confirm it.
